Allow me to give you a profile of the College for this year. We are a community of some two hundred people. There are one hundred returning students, thirty post- graduates, and eighty first year undergraduates.
The subject range represented is extraordinarily varied with student in all departments of the ANU and UC as well as at ACU, CIT, AIS and MBC. We are an international community, with residents from Asia, Europe, Africa and North America. There are students from West Australia, South Australia, Queensland and Victoria, as well as from rural and metropolitan areas of NSW and the ACT.
I count it as an extraordinary privilege to live in such
a community. We all have an opportunity to expand
our horizons through life at Johns, and to help each other
in pursuit of truth which is the quintessential task of a
university.
From the master My thanks extend to Shane Fairlie, Peter Goerman and the College
Staff, to the Tutors, to members of the RA Committee and to the
Tavern staff for what has been a fine start to the year.
From the Mater
The rich variety of the Johns community - international,
multi-cultural, multi-disciplined - as noted at the beginning of the
academic year, continues to increase. There are 20 new international
members since March. As well as these residents, there will be
short-term visitors staying with us. Please make these people feel
welcome.
March, 1998
As children we were insistently taught to say "please" when asking,
then "thank you" when the request had been granted. It is peculiarly
Christian to reverse that order and begin with "thank you". This is
what Ursula and John XXXIII Colleges do at the beginning of the 1998
Academic Year by celebrating the Commencement Eucharist. "Eucharist"
comes from the everyday Greek word for "thanks". To begin 1998 in
this way, before any of the details of the year have unfolded, is a
simple but profound expression of trust that this year will be one
in which, with our cooperation, the supremely human values of
community and justice and peace can flourish in our Colleges.

As well as a dramatic change in the weather, the Autumn-Winter term
brings its own special challenges. There are several sports finals
in which Johns will compete in pursuit of regaining the Interhall
Sports Shield; there is the challenge of Inward Bound; it is the
term to get the College Play underway; the debating season
commences, together with several arts events; and it all culminates
in the semester exams.
